In a conventional figure skating season, the World Championships would mark the conclusion of the international figure skating season. Yet, with the Grand Prix Series events being held as domestic events and the cancellation of  the Grand Prix Final, European Championships and Four Continents Championships due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 World Championships in Stockholm, Sweden, March 22-28, will be the first major international competition of the 2020-2021 season and will simultaneously be the season debut and finale for many of the competitors.

Last year, Brandon Frazier stood on the podium at the Orleans Arena in Nevada with his former partner Haven Denney, with whom he had won the bronze medal. On Saturday at that same arena, Frazier and his new partner, three-time U.S. Champion and 2018 Olympic team bronze medalist Alexa Scimeca Knierim, took home the pairs’ title in what was their competition debut. Knierim and Frazier partnered up in late March after Knierim’s husband and partner, Chris Knierim announced his retirement in late February.

In 2012, Alexa Scimeca had flown out to Colorado Springs, Colorado, to begin training with Dalilah Sappenfield, and was just beginning a partnership with Chris Knierim.

Scimeca and Knierim developed feelings for each other very quickly, but as they were still very early on in their partnership, Alexa couldn’t be totally sure if the feelings were mutual.
